Cutting PE on The Block

J Matthes

Cleanly cutting PE has been a bit of a conundrum. Too flexible of a surface and you bend the part, too hard and you have difficulty cutting. I have tried many surfaces, ranging from glass, plexi, aluminum, ebony to self healing mats. I have had results ranging from a headache, blackened fingers, oily PE to a whole lot of bent pieces.

I'm not alone in this, and was ecstatic when I received a package containing a surface I never tried before.

This was The Block

A high density plastic, The Block is a solid, non flexible surface that yields to a blade as a self healing mat would. Now a clean, virtually tab free cut is possible in one step.

Starting with a fresh #11 blade, wiped clean of the packaging oil (no need to tempt paint adhesion), place the tip on The Block. It's important to hold the blade with the bevel in line with the edge of the part.

Apply pressure and tilt the blade back to cut the part from the fret.
